　　注意啦，这里的wives 可不是“妇人”的意思，wives指的是那些“生活在古代、迷信的人”，俚语old wives’ tale的意思是“这纯属迷信！”“公元前300年，著名的古希腊哲学家柏拉图先生首次发明了这个短语”。16世纪，荷兰学者伊拉兹马斯的作品中也使用到了这个短语。请看例句：

　　英语中，“cut-and-dried words”表示“套话”的意思。这个短语源于伐木业。长在林间的树木若要成为商用木材，锯下后比被风干。同时，锯下的木材必得合乎标准长宽。由此，这种“standardized lumber that is cut and dired”（风干后合乎标准的木材)常用来比喻某类言行从不标新立异、某种结果已在预料之中、某类影片成一种套路模式等意思。例句：

　　踮着脚尖在一条线上走？别误会，它可不是走钢丝呦。它的意思是“听从命令，服从纪律、按惯例行事”。line有“起跑线”之意，运动员用脚尖踮着起跑线，等待着发枪施令。line还指“在阅兵场上画的一条直线”，新兵集合的时候都必须在直线上列队。因此toe the line就有了“服从命令”的含义。例句：

　　在英语里“cry uncle”的意思是“投降”。这个俗语的来历与小孩打架有关。罗马帝国时期。罗马的小孩打架如果打输了，就会被对方逼着说“uncle,my best uncle”,不说就不放开。那么，为什么要叫“叔叔”呢?有猜测说，打输的小孩要向打赢的小孩表示“尊敬”，而叔叔和父亲的地位接近，所以就要叫“叔叔”。另外，还可以说“say uncle”、“yell uncle”或“scream uncle”.例句：

　　break one's duck 的完整表达方式是break one's duck's egg,意思是“（历经艰难后）最后得分”。Duck's egg源于英国的绅士运动“板球比赛”，是对“零蛋”的戏称。因为在板球比赛中，如果击球手在比赛中一球不进，记分员就会在他的名字后面画上一个零，而break one's egg就表示打破失利局面，终于得分。而在美国，“零蛋”常用goose egg 来表达。
