  A.K.A “the soul of the rose went into my blood“, by John William Waterhouse,one of the Pre-Raphaelite, 1908. The title was from a poem by Tennyson.

  Come Into the Garden, Maud

  by Alfred Tennyson

  Come into the garden, Maud,
  For the black bat, Night, has flown,
  Come into the garden, Maud,
  I am here at the gate alone;
  And the woodbine spices are wafted abroad,
  And the musk of the roses blown.

  For a breeze of morning moves,
  And the planet of Love is on high,
  Beginning to faint in the light that she loves
  On a bed of daffodil sky,
  To faint in the light of the sun she loves,
  To faint in his light, and to die.

  All night have the roses heard
  The flute, violin, bassoon;
  All night has the casement jessamine stirr’d
  To the dancers dancing in tune:
  Till a silence fell with the waking bird,
  And a hush with the setting moon.

  I said to the lily, “There is but one
  With whom she has heart to be gay.
  When will the dancers leave her alone?
  She is weary of dance and play.“
  Now half to the setting moon are gone,
  And half to the rising day;
  Low on the sand and loud on the stone
  The last wheel echoes away.

  I said to the rose, “The brief night goes
  In babble and revel and wine.
  O young lordlover, what sighs are those
  For one that will never be thine?
  But mine, but mine,“ so I sware to the rose,
  “For ever and ever, mine.“

  And the soul of the rose went into my blood,
  As the music clash’d in the hall;
  And long by the garden lake I stood,
  For I heard your rivulet fall
  From the lake to the meadow and on to the wood,
  Our wood, that is dearer than all;

  From the meadow your walks have left so sweet
  That whenever a March-wind sighs
  He sets the jewelprint of your feet
  In violets blue as your eyes,
  To the woody hollows in which we meet
  And the valleys of Paradise.

  The slender acacia would not shake
  One long milk-bloom on the tree;
  The white lake-blossom fell into the lake,
  As the pimpernel dozed on the lea;
  But the rose was awake all night for your sake,
  Knowing your promise to me;
  The lilies and roses were all awake,
  They sigh’d for the dawn and thee.

  Queen rose of the rosebud garden of girls,
  Come hither, the dances are done,
  In gloss of satin and glimmer of pearls,
  Queen lily and rose in one;
  Shine out, little head, sunning over with curls,
  To the flowers, and be their sun.

  There has fallen a splendid tear
  From the passion-flower at the gate.
  She is coming, my dove, my dear;
  She is coming, my life, my fate;
  The red rose cries, “She is near, she is near;“
  And the white rose weeps, “She is late;“
  The larkspur listens, “I hear, I hear;“
  And the lily whispers, “I wait.“

  She is coming, my own, my sweet;
  Were it ever so airy a tread,
  My heart would hear her and beat,
  Were it earth in an earthy bed;
  My dust would hear her and beat,
  Had I lain for a century dead;
  Would start and tremble under her feet,
  And blossom in purple and red.

   O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? What‘s in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet.

  A Red Red Rose

  Robert Burns. 1759–1796

  O MY Luve ‘s like a red, red rose
   That ‘s newly sprung in June:
  O my Luve ‘s like the melodie
   That‘s sweetly play‘d in tune!

  As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
   So deep in luve am I:
  And I will luve thee still, my dear,
   Till a‘ the seas gang dry:

  Till a‘ the seas gang dry, my dear,
   And the rocks melt wi‘ the sun;
  I will luve thee still, my dear,
   While the sands o‘ life shall run.

  And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
   And fare thee weel a while!
  And I will come again, my Luve,
   Tho‘ it were ten thousand mile.

  Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May

  Robert Herrick (1591-1674)

  Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
  Old time is still a-flying:
  And this same flower that smiles today
  Tomorrow will be dying.
  The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
  The higher he‘s a-getting,
  The sooner will his race be run,
  And nearer he‘s to setting.

  That age is best which is the first,
  When youth and blood are warmer;
  But being spent, the worse, and worst
  Times still succeed the former.

  Then be not coy, but use your time,
  And while ye may, go marry:
  For having lost but once your prime
  You may for ever tarry.

  Windflowers,my father told me not
  to go near them,he said he feared
  them always,and he told me that
  they carried him away.

  Windflowers,beautiful windflowers,
  I couldn‘t wait to touch them,
  to smell them I held them closely,
  and now I cannot break away ,their
  sweet bouquet disppears,like the
  vapor in the desert,so take a warning, son.

  windflowers,Ancient windflowers,
  their beauty captures every young
  dreamer,who lingers near them,
  but Ancient windflowers,I love you. ”

  The Rose

  Some say Love...
  It is a river that drowns the tender reed
  Some say Love...
  It is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed
  Some say Love...
  It is a hunger, an endless aching need

  I say Love...
  It is a flower, and you its only seed
  It‘s the heart afraid of breaking
  that never learns to dance
  It‘s the dream afraid of waking
  that never takes the chance

  It‘s the one who won‘t be taken
  who cannot seem to give
  And the soul afraid of dying
  that never learns to live

  When the night has been too lonely
  And the road has been too long
  And you think that love is only
  For the lucky and the strong

  Just remember...
  In the winter
  Far beneath the bitter snows
  Lies the seed
  That with the sun‘s love
  In the spring
  Becomes the Rose

  Manon Balletti loved Casanova since she was seven,and edicated him one of the finest declarations of love - "my lover, husband, friend, whatever you like". On one evening she decided to leave him and marry her cousin.And that terrible evening made the great gourmand could only face sipping a light consommé.But don't worry, next morning the greatest lover had recovered enough to join a lunch banquet.......

  “I had women, I played, I joined in the fun, I bawled, I scorned and was never slave to my passions, but they gave me pleasure. Of not hiding myself, I made my profession...”

  Sometimes Rose means more than exquisite beauty and passionate love.It was once the symble of war,slaughter, conspiracies,death, and ,finally, peace and unification of a country.

  “玫瑰战争”(War of the Roses) 始于1455,持续30多年,交战双方兰开斯特家族(House of Lancaster)和约克家族(House of York)两个老牌封建旧贵族最终同归于尽。

  In the late 1400's the House of York fought the House of Lancaster for the English crown. Because Lancaster's heraldic badge was a red rose and York's was a white rose, the long conflict came to be known as the Wars of the Roses (1455 - 85).

  The wars started when the nobles of York rose against Henry VI of Lancaster who was a feeble ruler. Edward IV, of York, replaced Henry as king. Later, Henry again became king, but lost his crown once more to Edward after the battle of Tewkesbury in 1471. The Yorkists held power until Richard III lost his throne to the Lancastrian Henry Tudor. Henry Tudor married into the House of York. This personal union ended the conflict, and a new famous dynasty, the Tudors, emerged.

  Below are the two roses of Lancaster(red) and York(white)

  Charles Sillem Lidderdale (1831--1895)

  This popular genre painter, based throughout his life in London devoted most of his efforts to portraying single females in rural landscapes.

  Or else a cherry (double graced)

  Tis the last rose of summer,

  Left blooming alone,

  All her lovely companions

  Are faded and gone,

  No flow'r of her kindred

  No rosebud is nigh

  To reflect back her blushes,

  Or give sigh for sigh

  I'll not leave thee, thou lone one,

  To pine on the stern,

  Since the lovely are sleeping,

  Go sleep thou with them.

  Thus kindly I'll scatter

  Thy leaves o'er the bed,

  Where thy mates of the garden

  Lie scentless and dead.

  So soon may I follow

  When friendships decay;

  And from love's shining circle

  The gems drop away!

  When true hearts lie wither'd,

  And fond ones are flow'n

  Oh!Who would inhabit

  This bleak world alone?

  "Diana, the English Rose"

  Artist Alexander Presniakov describes the events that led him to paint the official portrait of Lady Diana Spencer, the Princess of Wales in 1982, months before she became engaged to H.R.H. Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. The beloved painting became the official engagement portrait of Lady Diana Spencer.

  The original portrait is in a Private Collection at Buckingham Palace.

  "At age eighteen, I had the honor and privilege of painting the portrait of the internationally famous Grand Dame of romance novels, Barbara Cartland. In her English Estate, and the spectacular living room, where she dictated most of her world famous novels, had the beauty, ambiance and electrical charge one can imagine, only after reading her novels.

  Ms. Cartland loved the portrait I painted of her and asked me to meet her granddaughter..... indicating that, if her granddaughter liked the sketches I was asked to present, Ms. Cartland would commission me to paint the granddaughter‘s portrait as a present from her. But, I never dreamed of the events that were to follow.

  At the appointed time, to my amazement, the very beautiful, and very shy Lady Diana Spencer entered the living room.

  Prior to that moment I did not know the identity of Ms. Cartland‘s granddaughter. Sitting in front of the spectacular bay windows of the living room, with the sunset beyond, she looked like an angel with the halo of the sunset around her.

  Lady Diana liked my sketches of her and as her grandmother gave her a rose from a magnificent flower arrangement in the living room, she said "oh, yes my dear, Diana the English Rose." The title for the portrait was born.

  The painting reflects the essence of the young, bashful and very lovely Diana, first introduced to the world. The beautiful face, the soft smile and her graceful hands are holding a magnificent yellow rose, exquisitely captured by the soft colors and soft light,

  of the expertly precise brush strokes of the artist.

  Lady Diana was beautiful, warm and gracious. The world loved her then and continues to love her today.

  I never imagined the tragedy that followed and the significance of "Diana, the English Rose", forever in our hearts, stated Alexander Presniakov."

    Compare this to the situation in Premier Wen’s China. There is only one acceptable version of history, at least at any given time; history often changes, but only when the Communist Party decides to change it.

    For example, according to a report by Howard W. French in the New York Times last December, many textbooks don’t mention that anyone died at what the outside world knows as the 1989 massacre of student demonstrators near Tiananmen Square. One 1998 text notes only that “the Central Committee took action in time and restored calm.“ Anyone who challenges the official fiction is subject to harsh punishment, including beatings, house arrest or imprisonment.

    And if the 300,000 victims of the Nanjing Massacre are slighted in some Japanese textbooks, what of the 30 million Chinese who died in famines created by Mao Zedong’s lunatic Great Leap Forward between 1958 and 1962? No mention in Chinese texts; didn’t happen.

    Well, you might say, how a nation treats its internal history is less relevant to its qualifications for the Security Council than whether it teaches its children honestly about its wars with other nations. A dubious proposition, but no matter; as the Times found in its review of textbooks, Chinese children do not learn of their nation’s invasion of Tibet (1950) or aggression against Vietnam (1979). And they are taught that Japan was defeated in World War II by Chinese Communist guerrillas; Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima and Midway don’t figure in.

    “Facing up to history squarely“ isn’t easy for any country. Americans don’t agree on how to remember the Confederacy. Russia can’t yet admit to Soviet depredations in the Baltic republics. And, yes, Japan too often sees itself purely as a victim of World War II.

    But in countries that permit open debate, historical interpretations can be constantly challenged, revised, maybe brought closer to the truth. In dictatorships that use history as one more tool to maintain power, there’s no such hope.

    China’s Communists used to find it useful to vilify Russia in their history texts. These days, for reasons of China’s aspirations to lead Asia, Japan makes a more convenient villain. Next year might be America’s turn. The reasons may be complex, but none of them has much to do with facing history squarely.

    typical american stand and ideology!

    China's "invasion" in Tibet??? !!!!!"agression" against Vietnam????

    and "In dictatorships that use history as one more tool to maintain power, there’s no such hope. "????!!!!!
    a little bit communicational and journalist and sociological analysis of american press would reveal that, they too, are only a tool for maintaining the government's power at home, and american's power abroad! and that's understandable. the problem is that they can't see that themselves, or they are unwilling to see the truth!
